Dr. Kari Arnold the Area Orchard and Vineyard Systems Advisor at Stanislaus County, Associated with University of California Cooperative Extension, describes the connections between the Californian plant propagation system, the movement of mealybugs both in the vineyard and across the globe, the difficulty of identifying virused plants, and practices growers can and are using to manage the spread of red leaf viruses both within and between vineyards.

This episode features two speakers on pesticides: violations and pesticide container recycling.

Opening the show is an interview with Marc Lea, Deputy Agricultural Commissioner, San Luis Obispo County Ag Department. Marc describes some common violations of the pesticides regulations his office enforces. These include drift, improper use or lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the misuse of rodenticides.

Past two of the episode is a recording from the 2017 Sustainable Ag Expo. Lottie Martin, Deputy Agricultural Commissioner, Santa Barbara County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office talks about how to recycle empty pesticide containers safely.

This means wild animals are a consideration in farming activities year round. Vineyard Manger Lucas Pope and his team have found ways to co-exist with the native fauna including deer, coyotes, mountain lion, and rattlesnakes.
